Warren King, a Wisconsin-born artist, has captivated audiences worldwide with his unique approach to sculpture. His medium of choice? Corrugated cardboard, a material often found in recycling bins. King's work explores themes of belonging and heritage, particularly his Chinese-American roots, offering a fascinating perspective on identity and family history.
The Art of Cardboard:
What makes King's use of cardboard so intriguing is its simplicity and the challenges it presents. He embraces the limitations of this material, stating, 'I have a very limited palette of shapes that I have access to. The planar geometric look of my sculptures comes from the limitations.' This approach forces him to think creatively, pushing the boundaries of what cardboard can do as an artistic medium.
Homecoming Series:
One of King's most poignant works is the sculpture titled 'The Road Leads Home,' which depicts his grandmother. This piece is part of a larger series that tells the story of his family's journey as Chinese Americans in the Midwest. The sculpture symbolizes his grandmother's decision to leave China during the Chinese Civil War, a pivotal moment that shaped their future in America. King shares, 'For me, living in Wisconsin, I see that moment as very pivotal. It’s the moment where my grandmother made a decision that ultimately led to this life that I have here in Wisconsin.'
Art and Parenting:
King's personal experiences as a parent have also influenced his art. He explains, 'Art and parenting are so intertwined that they’re really inseparable. Both have been transformational for me.' His engineering background, characterized by methodical and detail-oriented thinking, contrasts with the intuitive and improvisational nature of art. However, raising children has inspired him to embrace a more spontaneous and creative approach, mirroring his children's uninhibited creativity.
Global Recognition:
King's work has gained international recognition, with exhibitions in New York, Italy, and Finland. His current display at the Lynden Sculpture Garden in Milwaukee, titled 'Warren King: Homecoming,' showcases his talent and unique perspective. Through his sculptures, King not only explores his own heritage but also invites viewers to reflect on their own stories and the complexities of identity.
